What Research is Beginning to Tell Us About Facial EMS

Among today's facial tools, EMS has attracted increasing attention from researchers because it works differently from traditional massage devices.

Instead of simply gliding across the skin, EMS delivers gentle electrical impulses designed to stimulate facial muscles.

Researchers are exploring whether this stimulation may help support facial muscle activity, improve skin elasticity and contribute to healthier-looking facial contours when used consistently.

One of the most comprehensive studies published to date followed 24 healthy women over an eight-week period.

Rather than simply comparing before-and-after photographs, researchers used a split-face study design, treating one side of each participant's face with a high-frequency facial neuromuscular electrical stimulation (fNMES) device while the other side received moisturiser alone.

This type of study design allows each participant to act as her own control, helping researchers compare changes more accurately.

The study also went well beyond photographs.

Researchers measured changes using:

  • Dermatologist wrinkle assessments
  • Specialised skin elasticity testing
  • Three-dimensional facial imaging
  • Facial blood-flow measurements
  • Participant questionnaires

After eight weeks of consistent use, researchers reported improvements in several measured areas, including:

  • Skin elasticity
  • Crow’s-feet wrinkle grading
  • Jawline definition
  • Cheek contour
  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
  • Facial blood flow

Participants also reported improvements in:

  • Skin firmness
  • Facial definition
  • Overall facial appearance

Interestingly, many improvements became more noticeable after eight weeks than after four weeks, suggesting that consistency played an important role.

The researchers also reported no treatment-related adverse events during the study.

While these findings are encouraging, it’s important to understand that the study investigated one specific high-frequency fNMES device that also incorporated LED and iontophoresis. The findings contribute to the growing body of research supporting this type of technology but should not be interpreted as evidence that every EMS device will produce identical results.
